Shade treeRich color, green shade, and easy growth.

Mature Shade Trees not only increase the value of your property, but they're also proven to reduce utility bills by up to 25%. For relief from the elements, plus fall color displays, classic beauty and more, Shade Trees are essential.

How and Where to Plant Shade Trees

Specific directions vary on the Shade Trees you purchase, but knowing your growing zone is an important first step.

After you’ve determined your zone, keep sunlight and watering needs in mind. Most prefer partial sunshine (anywhere from 4 to 8 hours of sunshine per day) and well-drained soil. Fertilizing and pruning needs will also depend on the Shade Trees you choose, but many do not need pruning. As far as when to plant your Shade Trees, we always recommend early spring or fall, before or after the threat of frost.

Planting is simple from there. Choose a location with well-drained soil, dig a hole big enough to accommodate the root ball of the tree (along with some extra width for mature development), position your tree and fill the hole. Then, water and mulch the adjacent soil to preserve moisture.

When to Plant Shade Trees

We always suggest early spring or fall for planting, before or after the risk of frost or frozen ground has passed.

Color Variations and Seasonal Change

Several of our Shade Trees, including the October Glory, Autumn Blaze, and Tulip Poplar, transition from green to yellow and red as the seasons change. Other Shade Trees include evergreen varieties and blooming varieties.
