Growing Lime Trees at Home

Lime Trees are one of the most popular options for home gardeners for their deliciously succulent and zesty flavor. Even better is the fact that it couldn't be easier to grow your own Lime Tree!

Planting directions for your Lime Tree will depend on the variety you choose, but all of these citrus fruit varieties (from the Key Lime to the Limequat) must be grown in the proper growing zones. If you're outside of the recommend growing zone for these trees, however, you can still plant them and keep them indoors.

How to Plant Lime Trees

First thing's first: plant your Lime Tree in early spring if it's going to be outside.

Otherwise, you can place your Lime Tree in a container to stay on the porch or move indoors almost any time of year. Generally, we do recommend container growing unless you live in a warm, humid area that has steady warm temperatures throughout the year.

Planting and Growing Limes

To actually plant your tree, choose an area with well-drained soil or select a container large enough to accommodate the tree’s root ball. From there, you can dig a hole that's wide and deep enough to accommodate your variety's root ball, place your tree, and backfill the soil. Water the surrounding soil to settle your tree’s roots and mulch if it's growing outside.

For indoor planting, select a pot that's about twice as wide as your tree's shipped container and make sure it has drainage holes. Using organic soil, fill your container halfway with soil, place and straighten your tree, then fill the pot with the remaining soil so that an inch remains free at the top. Finally, water the soil until you see drippage from your pot's drainage holes.
